Nicolas Boulerice (also a member of the group Le Vent du Nord) and bassist Frédéric Samson released their third album Cool Trad in 2024. This project puts forward the texts and poetry of the elders, supported by a music imbued with respect for tradition, but also ready to make it shine in new contexts. On the menu: 12 songs that testify to a certain form of slowness and melancholy, twelve encounters on the borders of jazz between the rhythm of words and swing.
On stage, Boulerice and Samson are always accompanied by their turntable and play archival samples, trad or jazz, in addition to various sounds captured in the city or in the countryside illustrating the songs and melodies played. The two musicians also opened up to other instruments such as a baritone guitar and a melodica, which allowed them to explore new musical playgrounds.
The album Maison de pierres – Confiné aux voyages, released in November 2020, resonated strongly in the folk community with nominations for Trad Album of the Year at the ADISQ and the Opus Awards, in addition to a nomination for Singer of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards. The show Confiné aux voyages was also selected for an Opus régions award in 2021, then for the concert of the year in world music in 2022, at the same gala. He also won the Prix Patrimoine de Culture Montérégie in 2021.
Friends for 30 years, Nicolas knew that only Frédéric could bring this musical journey to life thanks to his double bass. This complicity now leads them to the stages of Quebec and the international scene to offer a repertoire, stories and emotions.
